MACA Application 2022-2023

This application is open to any student zoned for a St. Landry Parish public school and entering 7th-12th grade in the 2022-2023 school year.  Once your application has been submitted and reviewed, you will be contacted by individual talent teachers to set up an audition appointment.

ABOUT MACA

MACA is home to St. Landry Parish students who are talented in one of the six art areas: creative writing, dance, instrumental music, theatre, visual arts, and vocal music. With emphasis on the arts, the school thrives by offering a rich curriculum that incorporates the arts while focusing on a full offering of academic subjects. The expected results are students who are well-rounded, exceptional individuals, whose performances in core curricular areas are enhanced by utilizing interdisciplinary collaboration with the arts.

GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING 

  • Students must be residents of St. Landry Parish and in grades 7-12 for the 2022-2023 school year. 
  • The following items must accompany each application. Applications that do not include the following will not be processed.
    • Most current report card
    • Signed letter of recommendation from a teacher, principal, or community member (not related to the student), attesting to the student’s talent ability and character. It must also include the relationship to the student, how long he/she has known the student, and contact information. 
    • Behavior report for the current school year, listing all write-ups and signed by the principal, assistant principal, or guidance counselor. If the student has no behavior record, he/she must present verification from the attending school on school letterhead and be signed by the principal, assistant principal, or guidance counselor.
  • Students may audition in two talent areas. The student must state his/her first choice and second choice.
  • In-person auditions will be held in March 2022. Parents will be contacted in advance to set up audition appointments.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

CREATIVE WRITING:

  • The student must submit two (2) original samples of his/her writing in two different styles (i.e. poem, essay, etc.), at least 1 should be a creative piece.
  • The student will complete a 30-minute writing exercise, followed by an interview.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC:

  • BAND INSTRUMENTS
    • The student must perform The District III Honor Band Audition Scales (G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab) and the chromatic scale.
    • In addition, each student must play two contrasting songs (Etudes).
      • Scales and contrasting songs (Etudes) can be downloaded from: Slbda Website: To download Etudes and Scales, go to slbda.org and hover over the Honor Band Tab. Move your curser down to Middle School Honor Band Auditions 2017-2018 then click on the Tab to the right. The next screen contains all the information you need to download.
  • PIANO
    • The student must perform any 6 of the 12 Major scales with two hands at least two octaves ascending and descending.
    • Each student must perform two (2) contrasting pieces/solos. A keyboard will be available. The major scales may be downloaded from the following website. https://pianoscale.org/scales/type/major/ 

THEATRE:

  • The student must present a prepared, memorized monologue or short story of approximately two (2) minutes in length, followed by an interview.
  • A copy of the piece must be presented at the audition.

VISUAL ARTS:

  • The student must submit a portfolio consisting of a minimum of five (5) works of original art.
    • 2 pieces of art with topics of your choice. Draw what you like to draw.
    • 3 pieces of art with shading: 1 landscape, 1 person(s), 1 still life
  • Artwork can consist of but is not limited to the following:
    • Pencil
    • Paint
    • Ink
    • Color pencil
  • The artwork should be recent.
  • Please DO NOT use loose leaf or line paper. Use typing paper, sketch book paper or canvas.
  • Size of paper:
    • No smaller than 8.5 x 11”
    • No larger than 18 x 20”
  • The student will participate in an on-site drawing exercise, followed by an interview. If you DO NOT turn in your drawings with the applications, your application will automatically be rejected!

VOCAL MUSIC:

  • The student must perform two (2) contrasting selections (a recorded instrumental track is optional), followed by a pitch matching test and an interview.
  • No rap auditions will be accepted; all music must be melodic in nature. Suggested genres are folk music, patriotic songs, or hymns.

DANCE:

  • The student is required to perform a Lyrical, Jazz or Ballet routine. Inappropriate movements are unacceptable. An interview will follow.
  • Music must be appropriate, relative to lyrics, and should not exceed 2 minutes in length. Rap & Hip hop music are unacceptable for this audition.
  • Proper dance attire and dance shoes are required. A costume may be used but is not mandatory. A cover-up must be worn over dancewear or costume to enter MACA building.

Parents/Guardians of all applicants will be notified of the results after all auditions are completed. Letters will be mailed out the week of May 31. A completed application form and an audition do not guarantee acceptance into MACA.
